Kenya eTA rejection: 7 gaps that get applications refused
The answer
Verified 30 October 2026Why do Kenya eTA applications get rejected?
Kenya eTA applications get rejected when they don't meet the published requirements: a passport valid under six months after arrival, an unclear photo, details that don't match the passport, or a missing itinerary, accommodation confirmation or purpose document. The government doesn't publish refusal reasons, so check each requirement before you submit.
TL;DR
- The government lists requirements but doesn't publish refusal reasons.
- Most gaps are procedural: dates, photo, matching details, missing documents.
- Check every requirement before you submit; you can't edit afterwards.

What the official requirements say
The official portal lists what every application needs: a passport valid for at least six months after you arrive with a blank page, a selfie or passport-type photo, contact details, your arrival and departure itinerary, an accommodation confirmation, and documents for your purpose of travel. It doesn't say why applications are refused. Each requirement below is a gap that gives an officer a reason to say no.
Seven gaps to close before you submit
- Passport validity. It must be valid for six months after your arrival date, not your application date.
- No blank page. The passport needs at least one.
- The photo. It must clearly show your face; see what makes a photo pass.
- Details that don't match your passport. Names, date of birth and passport number must be exactly as printed.
- No accommodation confirmation. A hotel booking, or your host's details if you stay with family.
- An incomplete itinerary. Arrival and departure, including how you leave Kenya.
- Missing purpose documents. For example an invitation letter for business or a family visit; the documents checklist lists them.
If you've already submitted
You can't edit an application after submitting it. Read what to do about a mistake before you apply again. To catch these gaps first, start your checklist.
